Confidentiality Plea

Government-commissioned proposals to safeguard lawyer-client communications from interception by the police and security services are inadequate, the Law Society and Bar Council have told parliament. A joint brief issued ahead of a commons debate on David Anderson QC’s review of state surveillance legislation, which was published earlier this month, said that legal professional privilege is ‘inviolable’ and called for statutory protection. The professional bodies stressed that proper protection for legal privilege is not ‘special pleading’ on behalf of lawyers, but would be for the benefit of both clients and the wider public interest. [Courtesy: The Law Society Gazette]
