Law schools reopen with visors and temperature checks

By Jemma Slingo  >>

Law school campuses start to reopen this month as students prepare for a term of protective visors, thermographic cameras, plastic screens and one-way systems.

The University of Law’s nine UK campuses will fully open next Monday. Tutors will wear protective visors when teaching and face coverings will be mandatory on campus, subject to exemptions.

Thermographic cameras will also check students’ temperatures on arrival, and communal areas have been fitted with Perspex screens and social distancing markers.

Meanwhile, specialist university BPP is preparing to reopen some of its study centres from 21 September to enable access to personal study and library facilities. However, according to its website, all events, gatherings or meetings are to be offered virtually, postponed or cancelled, and teaching continues to be delivered online.

The start of the academic year has not been without incident. The Gazette understands that BPP has been contacted by the Bar Standards Board after students on the Barrister Training Course (BTC) – which replaced the Bar Professional Training Course this month – complained they had not received their timetables.

Several students who were due to start post-graduate courses yesterday claim they have still not be issued with timetables despite BPP taking the first instalment of their fees. The Barrister Training Course costs £13,870 to study in London.

The BSB said it is aware of the problems students have faced and have been in contact with BPP to seek assurance that they are being addressed.

BPP has been approached for comment.
